In a basic nutshell, for the purpose of trying to decide which cards you'd like to learn and use- this is a very brief answer which I can offer:

A Standard Tarot Card Deck ~ is a deck of 78 cards. The most popular use is for a "Reading". A Major and Minor ( also known as Lesser Arcana )Arcana are represented. The Major Arcana consists of 22 cards which represent "major" archetypes,qualities, stages, or events in Life which we all experience at one time or another in different degrees. The Minor Arcana consists of 56 cards- 4 different suits are represented- like a regular deck of playing cards. Each suit representing qualities - for example the suit of Cups: generally represents the element of Water- which in turn represents our emotions, sensitivity, creativity, love. The suit of Swords: represents the element of Air, which in turn represents communication, mental prowess. The suit of Pentacles: represents the element of Earth, which in turn represents stability, finances, money, practicality. The suit of Wands: represents the element of Fire, which in turn represents enthusiasm, adventure, excitement, strength.

Different Tarot Card Decks may contain any 4 suits - they may be called by other names- but generally still represent the energies of the 4 directions or elements.

An Oracle Deck of Cards: is a deck of any number of cards. They are also a divination tool for a "Reading". Generally, they are based on a specific belief system or culture. Each card is incredibly symbolic and represents qualities depicted by the symbolism of the picture. For instance: Animal Medicine Oracle Cards are based on Native American Animal Symbolism. The Butterfly symbolizes in a nutshell: Transformation. It teaches us to recognize and understand the cycles and stages of life. Once recognized- we can see where we're at, and know exactly the next step to take.
